Cabling and Bracing

Maple tree branches

As trees grow and age often, they develop structural weaknesses that require supplemental support. We always try to achieve and healthy, strong structure through pruning, but when pruning doesn’t lower the level of risk to an acceptable amount cabling and bracing are required.

Cables are either steel or synthetic and will span the canopy to support limbs and branches. Depending on the size of the tree and severity of the weakness, we will advise on the right cable support solution for your situation. The height of installation is important and cables that are installed incorrectly can be either ineffective of have the opposite affect of their intended purpose and actually increase the chances of failure. It is important to know that cables do not eliminate the chances of branch or tree failure, they serve to reduce risk.

Bracing is done by drilling directly through the wood of the tree and installing threaded steel rods with washers and nut secured to either end. This method is used for things like co- dominant trunks (two trunks growing close together of a similar size) with weak attachments to each other, or in some cases to secure a split in a trunk of branch and prevent it from worsening.
